So with tax season upon us and so many people saying different things about how girls pay their taxes in video chat. I figured I'd take a look at how things work and add my opinion to everyone else's…because why shouldn't I?
As it turns out, if you listen to the online gossip and such, there is a part of the industry that tries to avoid paying taxes properly and tries all sorts of weird things to do so. Not declaring their full income, pretending they don't work at all… or even being "fake" hired somewhere with a smaller income. While I get why some people try that (well, get is a strong word…I understand that some people may have issues with money, too many bills, stuff like that) it's really not the best of ideas. You know what they say: "The only two things you can't escape from are Death and Taxes…and I'm not so sure about Death. "
Sadly, because some people still judge CamGirls for what they do, a lot of them choose to take that road. Whether it's just lack of information or malicious intent, it happens and due to the nature of the job and the money that can actually be earned this way…authorities tend to crack hard down on this.
So, say you just started this job. Money is good, things are going your way…but you realize New Year is coming and with that the inevitable approach of paying your dues. The first thing you should be doing depends on how you do your job. Are you an independent model or do you work from a studio? If you're working on your own you just need to do a quick google search on your nation's tax collecting service and browse for what papers need filling and what the procedure is. If you can't find it easy enough, just find a contact number and give them a call to ask for information. I know that in some places there is a stigma attached to working in video chat (which is completely weird to be honest, but that's a talk for another time) but you don't need to worry about that. Just tell them you're a private contractor and want to learn how you should declare your revenue.
Now, if you're working for a studio you need to interest yourself on what the procedure is. Ask your employer, someone on the staff who knows better. If everything is ordered up as it should, they have no reason to withhold any kind of information or papers as is needed. Some studios help the models pay their taxes, some just facilitate the process for them. That is pretty much something private between employer and employee and based on what they negotiated.
As with all industries you will find people that are less than honest and would rather take some shortcuts, maybe a trick here and there. My advice is to avoid things like that at all cost. While it is true than in the short run you'll think it's wonderful because you get some extra money. In the end it will catch up with you and you might be forced to pay huge fines or even worse, depending on the severity of the money embezzled. Because yes, dodging your taxes as such is pretty much embezzlement…and we all know how fond the government is with that.
It's a responsibility we all have to accept as part of living in a civilized society, no matter what our status and job is. My advice for you would be to go the honest way, you sleep better at night and you have nothing to worry about in regards to someone catching you, or getting in trouble for it. Inform yourself and what the procedures for your situation are and follow them accordingly. Whether you're independently working and take care of your own finances or you want to find a job at one of many studios make sure your documents are in order and properly filled.
Video chatting is an ever growing industry where you have the potential to earn a lot of money. The temptation will be bigger than usual, the dishonest "winnings" bigger as well. The fact that so many models choose to stay in a grey area is also a small part why some people look at it with mistrust instead of accepting things for what they are. That being said, those were my two cents to add to the situation and you should always do your proper research before taking any decision.
