Good studios won’t require you to invest your very first winnings in yourself but will do that for you (hint hint best studio taking care of you)
You know, I was once having this discussion with a couple of friends over a beer…”do you remember what you did with your first pay check?” Truth be told, and much to my shame, I don’t actually really know what I did with it. I guess it’s a mash up between bills, groceries and whatnot. Basically the mundane things that need taking care of so as to live. So it made me wonder what does someone who potentially has the chance for a very hefty first pay check (in this case I’m talking about working in video chat) do with their first well earned money.
So I obviously turned to the models I used to work back then to ask them this very question when I had the first occasion. Some of them had pretty standard answers…much in the same lines with mine. Paying rent, buying stuff…things like that. One of them had a very endearing story regarding that which I am going to make special mention of because it just sounds like the thing that would make people’s day better. She took her parents out for lunch. Those were the first money she spent out of her first pay check…she wanted to show her parents how much she appreciates them and the hard work they put in for her and the financial support they offered her as she was growing up and going through school.
Two of them thought stated two opposite things that kind of caught my attention. Let’s call them A and B for the sake of expediency. A is one of the “veterans”…has been in the business for a while and made a pretty big name for herself. So she thought a little as she took this stroll down memory lane and realized that her first pay check was almost entirely used by the shady studio she used to work back then. They told her at the time that it’s only normal for her to reinvest the money in herself in order to increase her earnings. As that sounds perfectly legitimate and considering it was being said to a fairly naive and optimist girl in that moment…she didn’t give it a second thought.
The problem started showing itself when she realized that the actual investment came down to a couple of pairs of shoes and two or three simple dresses. Which would have accounted for maybe half of the money she gave them. After a while she obviously brought this up with the management and she only got vague promises about things to come and what they’ll be buying for her. As you may have imagined that never happened and since she gave them the money pretty much in good faith thinking that they are actually interested in her there was no way for her to recuperate them. That was a valuable lesson learned there and in her own words “Good that it was so early and not with a bigger amount of money” It served her well in the future and it helped her sift through potential sketchy employers and choose the best for her.
From that we shall move on to B. Fresh faced and with that kind of boundless optimism that makes people like me stop dead in their tracks and ask themselves “the fuck?”…but I digress. B had the incredible fortune (and inspiration) to pick one of the best choices as far as studios go. Her first pay check was actually supplemented with a bonus from the studio’s part because of the very good first month she had. Not only did she exceed expectations as far as earnings go…she also proved herself to be very hard working and serious. So now here she was with a lot more money than she had seen so far…what to do? The same thought of investing the money in herself to improve next month occurred to her but she was actually surprised when the staff at the studio announced her that there is no need to worry in that direction since they had already made some appointments for her (think hair salon, manicure…stuff like that) and were going to bring some things to improve her wardrobe.
So as it turns out, she actually got to spoil herself with her first pay check after the first month in which she worked. Which in turn made her into an incredibly dedicated model and loyal to the studio that treated her so well and helped her with the beginning of her career. I was curious so I did ask her what she did treat herself with. Day at a spa, a trip to a warm place for a seaside holiday and…lots of sweets obviously. She said that she spent them all almost completely on herself since she wanted to show herself what she is working for and make sure she stays motivated. Not a bad way of putting things truth be told.
So there you go, the first pay check is less about what you actually spend it on but more about why. Gratitude, fun, responsibility? All valid reasons and perfectly achievable in the right circumstances. A good employer will always know how to motivate their employees and make them feel wanted and appreciated.
